A family of three cows grazes outside Block 402 Fernvale Lane, and children climb inside all of them. The cow playground at Fernvale Acres is the best known of the new Sengkang playgrounds, but it has company: a mangrove-root climber next door at Fernvale Dew, weaver-bird nests on stilts at Rivervale Shores and a wrecked ship at Compassvale Crescent.
These are HDB precinct playgrounds, so they are free, open at all hours and spread across the town. This guide groups them by neighbourhood so a family can plan one or two in a single outing.
What the Sengkang Playgrounds Cluster Is
The cluster covers four themed HDB playground sets in Sengkang, split between Sengkang West (Fernvale) and Sengkang East (Rivervale and Compassvale). Each was built with its estate, and each follows a single theme across several play areas.
Layout and Themes
Fernvale Acres and Fernvale Dew sit side by side on Fernvale Lane in Sengkang West, so the cow playground and the mangrove climber can share a morning. Rivervale Shores is on Sengkang East Drive near Sungei Serangoon. The Compassvale shipwreck is on Compassvale Crescent, closer to Sengkang town centre.

The playground supplier Playpoint lists Fernvale Acres as completed in September 2021 for HDB, with ADDP Architects as architect and custom elements by Kinetics Playground. Rivervale Shores was completed in December 2023, designed by Carve with Surbana Jurong as architect. Cheekiemonkies reported the Compassvale Crescent ship playground as new in 2017, with a design that nods to Sengkang’s past as a fishing area.
How These Differ From Older Sengkang Playgrounds
Older Sengkang precincts have standard modular playgrounds. These newer sets are built around a story, so children play at being farmers, birds or sailors instead of just sliding. Fernvale Acres and Rivervale Shores also include adult and senior fitness stations, which lets grandparents exercise beside the play area.

The cluster suits families living in Sengkang who want variety close to home, and visitors willing to cross the town by LRT. Children aged two to ten get the most out of it. Families wanting toilets, sand and a park should combine a visit with the Sengkang Riverside Park playground.

Fernvale Acres Cow Family (Blk 402 Fernvale Lane)
Three cows stand in front of Blk 402: a large bull, a cow and a calf. The bull has green handholds outside and a rope lattice inside for climbing. The cow sits on springs and hides a net inside for hide-and-seek, while the calf carries a hammock. BYKidO names them Mummy Cow, Boy Cow and Girl Cow. Cow bells are hidden around the structures.
Fernvale Acres Treehouse and Fairytale Tower
A three-tower treehouse beside the cows is joined by a wobbly bridge and ends in two blue slides. A trampoline is set into the ground nearby. The separate toddler playground uses Little Mermaid and Ugly Duckling themes, and its QR codes link to e-books and games. Senior fitness equipment such as a free runner and a power bike sits nearby.
Fernvale Dew Mangrove Climber and Curled Net
Fernvale Dew has four playgrounds on a landscape deck above its car park, across Blocks 400F, 401, 401A and 401E. The mangrove playground at Blk 401A has a stump-shaped climbing structure with root-like ropes, hammocks, a four-seat see-saw and a built-in trampoline. At Blk 401E, older children get a spiral climbing net and a cluster of hammocks. Blocks 401 and 400F have low toddler structures.
Rivervale Shores Flying Birds Nest (Blk 173C)
Three raised pods in light blue, teal and yellow imitate weaver bird nests. Children reach them by rubber hammock steps, a metal ladder, climbing ropes or a rope ladder. Netted bridges connect the pods, and slides drop from two of them. Two basket swings and a seated swing stand nearby. BYKidO notes that a planned flying fox was left out.
Rivervale Shores Land Bird Playground (Blk 175A)
This playground is set beside the Sungei Serangoon waterfront, according to BYKidO. Raised platforms lead to slides and to ground trampolines. Low mounds with tunnels underneath suit younger children, and a sand pit carries climbing obstacles. Playpoint’s project notes mention excavators for sand play and undulating ground planted with greenery.
Rivervale Shores Colourful Tower (Blk 173A)
The tower is the preschool playground. A tube slide runs from the top, a stack of climbing cubes leads up, and drums and bells give children something to hit. A blue see-saw completes it. BYKidO describes a playground for under-sixes at this end of the estate.
Compassvale Crescent Shipwreck (Blks 286 and 289)
Cheekiemonkies describes this as an old ship that has gone down in a storm. It has a broken mast, climbing ropes and balance beams, a slide, and a hidden compartment inside the hull. A smaller boat nearby is for younger children. Little Day Out calls it a three-masted, two-level ship with a toddler pirate ship beside it.

None of these playgrounds has a toilet, so plan around a neighbourhood mall or coffee shop. BYKidO found plenty of shaded resting spots at Rivervale Shores, but reported no water coolers or vending machines there. Carry water to every playground in this guide.
Age Suitability
Toddlers (1 to 3)
Toddlers have their own areas at the Fernvale Acres fairytale tower, the Fernvale Dew toddler decks and the Rivervale Shores Colourful Tower. The spring cow at Fernvale Acres and the small boat at Compassvale also suit this age.
Ages 4 to 6
This group can use most of the equipment. The cows, the Land Bird mounds and the Rivervale nests are the likely favourites, and a parent should stay near the nest ladders.
Ages 7 to 12
Older children should head to the Fernvale Dew curled net, the Fernvale Acres bull and the Compassvale shipwreck, which Cheekiemonkies found best for children who like climbing and balancing. The Rivervale nests also challenge children up to about ten.
Accessibility and Inclusive Features
The estates have barrier-free paths to their play areas. Most of the equipment still requires climbing, and none of these playgrounds is published as an inclusive playground.
Supervision
Rivervale Shores spreads over several blocks and levels, and BYKidO warns that finding each playground can be confusing. Agree a meeting point with older children. At Fernvale Acres, the nets inside the cows hide children from view, so count heads often.

Nearest MRT and Bus
Sengkang MRT on the North East Line is the interchange for both Sengkang LRT loops. HDB’s Rivervale Shores brochure puts Bakau LRT around ten minutes’ walk from the estate and lists buses 50, 62, 85 and SE3 in the area. Fernvale Acres and Fernvale Dew are on the Sengkang West loop, but we could not confirm which station is closest. The Compassvale ships are in Sengkang East, and we could not confirm the closest LRT station for them either.
Parking
Each estate has its own HDB multi-storey car park with standard HDB charges. Fernvale Dew’s playgrounds sit on the landscape deck above its car park, which is convenient for families driving in with a stroller.
Best Time to Visit
Morning before 10am and late afternoon are the most comfortable, especially at the Compassvale ship and the Fernvale Acres cows, which stand in the open. Leave the play areas when thunder starts, since none of them is covered.

These are residential playgrounds with no BBQ pits or picnic lawns. Fernvale Acres and Fernvale Dew are served by coffee shops in the Fernvale precincts. Rivervale Shores has Rivervale Mall and Rivervale Plaza within reach, according to HDB’s estate brochure. Anchorvale Village at 339A Anchorvale Road, which Sassy Mama describes as having a hawker centre and a rooftop playground, is another option on the east side.
Group visits should stay small and quiet, because flats overlook every playground. A preschool outing is easiest at Fernvale Dew, where the deck keeps children off the roads.
