Far East Organization Children’s Garden, Gardens by the Bay

A one-hectare playground on the edge of Marina Reservoir, the Far East Organization Children’s Garden is the largest free water play site in the city centre. It sits inside Gardens by the Bay, opened in January 2014, and packs a splash zone, two treehouses, a toddler corner and a long adventure trail into one gated space for children aged 12 and below.

The catch is its schedule. Outside school holidays the garden opens only from Thursday to Sunday and on public holidays, and it also moved its entrance in March 2026 because of construction work nearby.

What the Far East Organization Children’s Garden Is

Layout and Theme

The garden is split into separate zones by age. A toddler area and a small fish fountain sit near the entrance, the main water play fills the middle, and two rainforest treehouses and an adventure trail run around the far side. A leaf-shaped canopy shades part of the site, and a sheltered amphitheatre with stepped concrete seating gives parents a place to sit.

The garden looks over Marina Reservoir and Kingfisher Lake. On a clear day the view from the treehouses takes in the bay and the city skyline.

History and Designer

UK landscape architects Grant Associates designed the garden, which opened on 21 January 2014 with sponsorship from Far East Organization. The firm described the brief as connecting children to nature through technology and planting. Motion sensors in the water play are the technology part, since the jets respond to children moving across the floor.

How It Differs From Other Water Playgrounds

Most free water playgrounds in Singapore sit in HDB estates or regional parks. This one is larger, has changing rooms and lockers, and combines water with dry climbing structures in one fenced area. It also enforces an age rule, which most public playgrounds do not.

Who It Suits

The garden suits families with children between one and twelve who can plan around its opening days. It works best for siblings of different ages, since the toddler zone and the older-child zones sit within sight of each other.

Play Zones at the Gardens by the Bay Children’s Garden

Water Play

The main water play is a paved splash zone roughly the size of a basketball court. Jets rise from the ground at different heights and speeds when sensors pick up movement, and children soon learn to trigger them on purpose. Hydro Vaults, Water Splines and orchid-shaped splash buckets add overhead water, and the buckets tip at intervals. This zone is designated for children aged six to twelve.

Fish Fountain for Toddlers

A smaller Fish Fountain sits in the toddler area, with low sprays and water tunnels at a height that suits children under five. It lets younger children get wet away from the faster, rougher play in the main zone.

Toddler Play Area

The toddler zone is for children aged one to five. A sway bridge and stepping springs sit at ground level, with a low slide and hammock swings beside them, and the cafe is next door.

Rainforest Treehouses

Two treehouses rise above the planting on the far side of the garden, and both are reserved for children aged six to twelve. Inside, children find hammocks, swinging nets and slides, and elevated platforms and rope walks link the levels.

Adventure Trail

A 130-metre trail runs through the treehouse area with more than ten obstacles. It includes suspension bridges, a spider web of ropes, a rock-climbing wall, monkey bars and balancing sections, and it passes under topiary arches along the way.

Is It Free?

Entry is free and no booking is needed. Gardens by the Bay charges only for the conservatories and some ticketed attractions, and the outdoor gardens around the playground are free to walk through.

Water Play Hours and Closure Days

The water play shuts at 6.30pm, half an hour before the garden closes. Outside school holidays, the garden opens only from Thursday to Sunday plus public holidays. During school holidays it opens from Tuesday to Sunday. When a Monday is a public holiday, the garden closes on the following Tuesday instead.

Toilets, Lockers and Drinking Water

TripAdvisor reviewers and Bykido both mention clean changing rooms and lockers, which makes a water play visit easier with young children. Bykido reports that there is no water cooler, so parents should bring filled bottles for the whole group.

Age Suitability at the Far East Organization Children’s Garden

The garden admits children aged 12 and below. Adults may enter only when they accompany a child in that age range.

Toddlers (1 to 3)

Toddlers have their own zone with the Fish Fountain, and it suits them well. The main water play and the treehouses are marked for older children, so parents of toddlers should expect to stay in the toddler area.

Ages 4 to 6

Children of four and five still belong in the toddler zone under the garden’s rules, and six-year-olds move up to the main water play and treehouses. A family with a five-year-old and a seven-year-old will have to split up for part of the visit.

Ages 7 to 12

This age group gets the full site. The motion-sensor jets and the adventure trail both suit children up to twelve, and many spend two or three hours here.

Accessibility and Supervision

Adult supervision is required in the water areas at all times. The main zones are paved. The treehouses and trail depend on ladders and rope bridges. Parents with a child who uses a wheelchair should phone Gardens by the Bay to ask which zones are reachable.

From 26 March 2026, Gardens by the Bay closed the entrance along the Waterfront Promenade because of bridge construction. Visitors now use a new entrance near the Sun Pavilion.

Nearest MRT and Bus

Gardens by the Bay station (TE22) on the Thomson-East Coast Line is the closest, and Exit 1 leads into the Gardens beside Satay by the Bay. From Bayfront station (CE1/DT16), take Exit B and follow the underground link, then cross the Dragonfly Bridge or Meadow Bridge. Bus 400 runs from Tanjong Pagar MRT to Marina Gardens Drive.

Parking

The Satay by the Bay car park, with 176 car lots, is the most convenient. The main entrance basement car park has 420 lots and The Meadow car park has 284. All Gardens by the Bay car parks charged S$0.035 per minute, capped at S$30 a day, when we checked.

Best Time to Visit

Arrive at 9am when the gates open. Little Day Out lists 10am to noon and 4pm to 6pm as the busiest periods, and school holidays bring the largest crowds. The water play is unshaded for much of the day, and staff can suspend it during lightning alerts.

The garden had a TripAdvisor rating of 4.6 out of 5 from 62 reviews when we checked in September 2026. Reviewers praise the free entry and the size of the water play, and several mention the separate toddler water feature. Clean changing rooms and lockers come up often, as does the choice of dry play in the treehouses and trail.

Common Complaints

One reviewer noted that there are no tables outside the play zones for parents to sit and watch with a drink. Another questioned how closely staff enforce the age rule. Some visitors found the on-site cafe expensive. Older blog guides still list Tuesday to Sunday opening, so some families arrive on a school-term Tuesday or Wednesday and find the gates shut.

Picnics and Group Visits at Gardens by the Bay

The children’s garden has no BBQ pits, and we found no public BBQ facilities in this part of Gardens by the Bay. Families can eat at the cafe beside the toddler zone or walk about four minutes to Satay by the Bay, a hawker centre inside the Gardens. Lawns elsewhere in the Gardens suit a picnic mat before or after play.

Preschool and school groups should contact Gardens by the Bay before a visit, since the garden manages crowd levels and the age zones are enforced. Private parties and decorated set-ups are not suited to the playground itself.

The PropNex Family Zone in the Active Garden, also inside Gardens by the Bay, opened in 2025 and stays open from early morning until late at night. It has no water play, but it has an inclusive playground and a musical play area, and it admits adults and pets. Families who find the children’s garden closed on a weekday often go there instead.
