Free Indoor Playgrounds in the North and North-East

The north and north-east have the most free children’s play areas of any region in Singapore and almost none of them are indoors. Every mall playground on this list is on a roof or an open deck.

The fully indoor free options are a small castle play space at Lentor Modern, the supervised drop-off room at IKEA Tampines, and the public libraries. That is the honest position, and it matters more here than anywhere because this region’s rooftops are among the least shaded in Singapore.

The Fully Indoor Options

Lentor Modern

A small castle-themed indoor play space in a mall that opened in 2026: a low climbable mountain, a slide, a rocking horse and giant beanbags, with adult seating alongside.

It is small. This is a stop-off in the middle of a shopping trip rather than a destination, and it suits toddlers and preschoolers.

As the newest venue on this list, its details are the most likely to change. The level and hours are not published.

IKEA Tampines, Småland

A supervised, air-conditioned soft-play and ball-pit room inside the store, free but tightly conditioned.

The child must be aged four to ten and between 100cm and 130cm tall, and both must be true. They must be toilet-trained with a temperature of 37.4°C or below. Maximum one hour per child per day. Registration is at the door on a first-come basis with no advance booking, an indemnity form is signed, and only the registered parent or guardian may check the child in and out with photo identification. That adult must remain in the store and stay contactable, and IKEA may call a child out before the hour is up.

Last admission is 8pm. Expect queues at weekends.

The same arrangement runs at IKEA Alexandra.

Punggol Regional Library

Singapore’s largest public library at 12,180 square metres, inside One Punggol, with children’s and early literacy zones across several levels including interactive exhibits and technology areas.

Open 10am to 9pm daily, with reduced hours on public holidays. It is free and fully air-conditioned.

It is a reading space rather than a playground. There is no play equipment, and library conduct applies. Sengkang Public Library at Compass One serves the same function on a smaller scale.

The Outdoor Options

NEX, Level 4 Rooftop, kidzPLAY @ SkyGarden

A pirate-themed rooftop split into a water zone with a pirate ship, a giant octopus slide and water-spouting trampolines, and a dry toddler zone.

The wet zone covers ages five to twelve and the dry zone ages two to five. Both open 11am to 7pm daily.

There is a changing room but no showers, and only one changing room for a busy site. Bring towels and dry clothes and expect to queue for the change.

Shade is minimal. This is a morning or late-afternoon venue and it closes for safety in rain and lightning.

Waterway Point, Level 2 West Wing, Happy Park

A combined wet and dry outdoor play deck. The wet side has a shallow lake with lily-pad stepping stones, water curtains, jet sprays and mini fountains; the dry side has tunnel slides, trampolines, rope climbing, a hammock and rabbit-hole caves with bubble viewpoints.

Hours are commonly listed as 10am to 7pm but could not be confirmed with the mall. Verify before travelling.

The wet zone has had temporary closures for works. The mall also has separate paid indoor playgrounds, which are different venues.

For a small paid indoor playground nearby, Merry Haus at Oasis Terraces opens to 9pm daily, and Kiztopia at Punggol Town Square is the flagship option in the district.

The Seletar Mall, Level 4 Rooftop

A mid-sized rooftop with a low fire-engine and house climbing structure, satellite towers with slides, a rope obstacle bridge, a wooden climbing tower with nets, teeter-totters, hammock swings and perimeter seating for parents.

The stated range is ages two to twelve. There is a triangular tarp over the main structure plus shelter huts, so it is more shaded than most rooftops here, though still open-air.

Published hours conflict between sources, with 8am to 11pm and 10am to 10pm both quoted. Confirm with the mall.

No water play.

Junction 8, Level 4 Roof Garden

A roof garden with a Wallholla vertical play structure and tube slide, boulder grips, spring riders, see-saws, a wavy climbing structure with tunnels and slides, and three climbable polyhedrons.

The mall’s page states it is open 24 hours, which in practice means bounded by mall hours of 10am to 10pm.

The deck has very little shade and no fans. This is an early or late venue.

Note that this is the mall’s own Wallholla and not the well-known public Wallholla at Bishan Street 13, which is a separate free playground a short walk away.

Causeway Point, Level 7, Woodlands

A dinosaur-themed wet playground built around a volcano with two slides, one water and one a dry tube, plus dinosaur figures with water jets, jump pads, musical tubes, hand drums and sensory water stations.

Open 10.30am to 9pm daily. Admission is free.

There is an outdoor rinse shower but no changing rooms, so bring a change of clothes and plan for a damp journey home. The playground is neon-lit in the evening, which makes an after-dinner visit a different experience from a daytime one.

Woodlands is in the north rather than the north-east, and this is the best free water playground in that part of the island.

Buangkok Square Park

Worth being precise about: the playground and water park here are in Buangkok Square Park, a public HDB park beside the Buangkok Square mall, not inside the mall.

A splash pad for ages six to twelve with spray fountains, jets, a spray-jet tunnel, a transparent tipping bucket and water wheels, plus a kampong-village-themed dry playground of elevated huts, netted bridges, climbing elements, slides and swings for ages two to five and older.

The water park runs 8am to 8pm. There is mall parking. No changing facilities were noted.

Less Certain Options

Guides report these but the malls’ own sites do not confirm them. Call before making a special trip.

Northpoint City, Yishun is reported to have a Level 4 rooftop wet-and-dry play area, open 10.30am to 9.30pm and closed on Mondays. A separate free indoor play space on Level 2 is also reported and could not be verified.

Sengkang Grand Mall is reported to have an outdoor play area near McDonald’s, 10am to 10pm.

Anchorvale Village, Sengkang is reported to have a Level 4 open-air sunken pirate-ship playground for ages five to twelve, 8am to 10pm.

What Is Not Here

No free mall play area could be verified at AMK Hub, Hougang Mall, Compass One or any Sembawang mall. Do not assume one.

On a Wet Afternoon

Every mall playground in this region is outdoors and closes when it rains.

With a Child Who Wants Water Play

Causeway Point is the best of them, with a volcano, two slides and a rinse shower. NEX and Waterway Point are the north-east alternatives.

Bring a full change of clothes to all three. None has proper changing facilities and NEX has one changing room for the whole site.

With a Toddler

NEX’s dry zone for ages two to five, the Seletar Mall rooftop, or Buangkok Square Park’s water play zone for two- to five-year-olds.

Lentor Modern works indoors, for a short visit.

With a Child Aged Eight or Above

Junction 8’s Wallholla vertical structure holds them, and so does NEX’s wet zone for ages five to twelve.

The Seletar Mall’s stated range runs to twelve and the equipment is mid-sized rather than challenging.

For an Hour Without the Children

IKEA Tampines Småland covers this, within its rules.

In the Evening

Causeway Point is neon-lit after dark and the temperature makes an 8pm visit far more pleasant than a 2pm one. Junction 8 and the Seletar Mall are also better late.

The Shade Problem

Rooftop playgrounds in this region are unusually exposed. NEX has very little shade, Junction 8 has almost none and no fans, and Causeway Point sits on an open Level 7 deck.

Between about 11am and 4pm, that makes most of them unusable rather than merely uncomfortable. Metal slides and rope elements get hot enough to be a hazard.

The Seletar Mall is the best-shaded of the rooftops, with a tarp over the main structure and shelter huts, and it is the one to choose if the timing cannot be helped.

Otherwise the usable windows are roughly 8am to 10.30am and 5pm onward, which the evening lighting at Causeway Point and the long mall hours at Junction 8 both support.

Practical Notes

Bring a full change of clothes and a towel for any wet venue. NEX has one changing room and no showers; Causeway Point has a rinse shower and no changing rooms.

Check hours before travelling for the Seletar Mall, Waterway Point and Northpoint City, all of which have conflicting or unconfirmed opening times.

Check whether Northpoint City is closed on a Monday before planning a Monday visit there.

Read the Småland rules in full before relying on it, and bring photo identification for check-out.

Do not confuse Junction 8’s rooftop Wallholla with the public Wallholla at Bishan Street 13. Both are free and they are different places.
